“Kaamdhenu Raksha”

The primary activity of BGC Foundation is to promote the humane care of cows by providing knowledge and practical support for their compassionate care.

Sanctity of the cow, in Hinduism, the belief that the cow is representative of divine and natural beneficence and should therefore be protected and venerated. In addition, because her products supplied nourishment, the cow is associated with motherhood and Mother Earth.

The cow’s nature is represented in “Kaamdhenu”, the goddess who is the mother of all cows. In India, more than 3,000 institutions – Gaushalas care for old and infirm cows. According to animal husbandry statistics there are about 44,900,000 cows in India, the highest in the world. So while some old and infirm cows are treated in Gaushalas, the rest are generally abandoned at public places such as railway stations and bazaars.

What we do?

BGC Foundation has initiated project “Kaamdhenu Raksha” to take care of abandoned, sick, injured, orphaned and rescued cows and bulls. The first of it’s kind in Manipur. This project will be undertaking:

  • Shelter: Gaushala in Marou Village near Imphal, Manipur is under progress – whereby no milking cows, bulls, old and infirm cows, will be saved from cattle mafia and butchers.
  • Cow Hospital: Often abandoned cows hogging for food, land up eating plastics. Plastic affects their organs and gets collected in their body. As a result after sometime they stop eating their regular food and they often die a slow and a painful death due to starvation. “Kaamdhenu Raksha” pledges to help and cure – The Plastic Cow.
  • Animal Awareness Programs in schools.
  • Create Water haudis and feeding points for strays, apart from the animal shelters.
  • A 24 hours animal emergency helpline and an ambulance will be kept for support.
  • Neck Belt reflectors to prevent stray accidents on roads.
  • Mobility gives possibility: – The loss of limbs in pets or in their wild counterparts can occur as a result of injury or diseases such as cancer. In most instances, three-legged animals are able to get about almost as well as four-legged ones, but the irregular motion and weight distribution involved in making that happen eventually take their toll on the rest of the body, ultimately shortening life spans and reducing the quality of life. With prosthetic limb replacement, which is slipped over the stump of an amputated limb and secured using straps and braces, can improve mobility and thus increase their life span too.

Animal welfare

Service is the “Karma” of BGC Foundation. Animal Welfare forms an integral part of the many initiatives we have undertaken to help aid creation. The volunteers rescue, rehabilitate and take care of any animal in need and have started dedicated programs for cows, dogs, monkeys and birds.
